Ms Pennington did a great job with her and I feel should be recognized for such a job well done. If the other teacher are any thing like her, wow !!. I can deal with all the fundraising, because I felt they were all for a good cause, and I went all the way to make each one a success. Our second child has attended since K and is currently in 3rd. Dr. McCool has been an excellent leader at the school. All of the teachers for each of our children has been motivational, committed to the children's growth and concerned with their progress in all areas, not just academic. We feel blessed to be a part of this school and support it fully. We, like some others, are not huge fans of fundraising, however, it has never been a hindrance to our children having what they needed. It would be nice if more money were allotted from the state, but it is also reality that this will not be happening. My only drawback was that at the start of both school years, we were not given the opportunity to meet the teachers, set-up desks and just get acquainted with the administration and parents before the first day of school. So, my daughter had to log around two bags of stuff. Being an educator, I love it when we have our open-house the night before the first day of school. It gets everything out of the way and I get to meet parents and talk. I do love the teachers there and the administration seemed fine to me. We are our 5th year and every year is better than the last!! My thoughts of the previous comments are that you typically hear from the few that want to complain. Very rarely to you hear from the satisfied parents. My suggestion to those that are unhappy with things is to get involved!! I am very involved with my kids education and social life. I have two children at Flowood and I couldn't be happier. The children are getting a wonderful education experience. They will be well prepared for middle school. As for the administration, both Dr. McCool and Mr. Vance are at the school for the children. They work to make sure the children are getting the best education possible. Parents who complain about the amount of lunch time and what is served need to go to the Department of Education to complain. The children that attend Flowood are very prepared for Middle School. For the fundraising efforts, these funds help the teachers buy needed items for their classrooms. Teachers are the most underpaid profession, but have the greatest impact on our future leaders. Giving them the ability to buy more interactive materials is a small sacrifice for the benefit. Both have gotten a quality education. I can't say enough about the teachers and the administration. My fifth grade daughter learned more things to prepare her for middle school than I can even begin to tell you. Her computer skills, life skills, and general subject area skills are wonderful thanks to Mrs. Brown,Mrs. Prestwood, and all of the previous teachers. The single gender classes gave my daughter the ability to strengthen her weaknesses and enhance her strong points. My other child has been given the same opportunities to develop way beyond the basics. I can't say enough about the teachers. Mr. Price continues to motivate my child. All I can say is that Flowood Elementary is far above the rest! The teacher is geat, but the administration is horrible. I am also horrified at all of the fundraising the school does. I can't keep asking people to buy things and I will not keep buying things. Also, the amount of time given the children to eat is just not long enough and the food they offer is not always age appropriate. My child is 5 and does not eat salads yet. I wish he would, but not yet. Most of the teachers are wonderful. The administration is the worst, though.They do not address anything other than discipline so not to draw notice to the school's short-comings.And they definetely, without a doubt in my mind, do not have the children's best interest at heart. It is strictly about assuring the test scores stay where they need to be. Without exposing myself, I will say that I do have a little experience with elementary educators and administrators and this school's leadership borders on neglect. I hope other parents will read this and know that you are not alone in your struggle with them or alone in your awful thoughts about the leaders. It in all honesty is not the teachers in most cases but the administration of this school. There are several areas that desperately need help. I do not believe in the constant fundraising efforts for a school that does not give back to the students. We have been at this school for 4 years now. We have had to teach our child on our own Math. The constant AR and AM goals are often out of reach for these children and when they are ready to scan for AM, the teacher is not there half of the time. I have been very disappointed in the structure of the classroom as well as the filth our children have to live in for half of their day. When we relocated here everyone was talking about how great this school district is. Well I haven't seen anything great about it! Teachers wait till school is almost over to tell you your child is struggling. Oh, did I mention tutoring. NONE!!Well unless you want to pay for it. I haven't seen any sign of this school being great plus they don't want to work with a child who is having problems in certain areas. Daily curriculum for my 3rd grade child is 'here is your goal for the year, work at your own pace, ask questions when necessary, take tests when you're ready, must meet goals'. There is no daily objectives that the teacher goes over with the whole class. The parents teach more at home than the teachers do at school (many times have gone over homework, that my child has said they have not covered yet & homework assignments given by teacher are not clear). Drop off in the morning is 7:00-7:30 and is a disaster. If this was extended to 8:00 like normal schools, it would alleviate the considerable amount of congestion. Inundated with fundraisers and continually sent home requests to send supplies or contribute $$ for something. Have not seen much use of fundraisers except new small playground. This school has not lived up to our expectations in that there are no science or computer labs, as we've experienced in the past at another school, and also there's no Spanish class. My son took Spanish at a former school for two years and it disappoints us that he will no longer advance in that area. The building is poorly kept and uninspiring, there's no pride in the upkeep. The classrooms are extremely small for the number of students, the children are crammed around tables instead of desks. We were inundated with fund raisers and requests for money last year, but there are no noticeable improvements to the building or academics. The academics are just not there as well - his spelling tests consisted of words any pre-schooler would know. This continued throughout the year - words such as 'house' and 'brown.' My son was unchallenged and bored. There's no computer or science labs. And, the school is in hideous shape. Horrid brown-painted walls, old office equipment piled in the 'cafeteria.' It's just an ugly, dirty building. Currently the school goes through the 5th grade. 4th and 5th graders are in gender specific classrooms and we have seen test scores rise. We do not receive a lot of money from any one source (just like every other school in MS!), but we are smart in the ways we use our funds. The teachers love what they do and that love begins with the Principal, Dr. Barbara McCool, and continues down the line to our janitors and cafeteria workers. We truly try to make learning a lifelong experience by teaching each student on his or her level. He could not yet read and did not understand phonics. During the course of the school year, he not only learned word sounds and combinations, but became a 'beginning reader' even before Christmas. He had surpassed the kindergarten reading level even before 3/4ths of the year had passed! This school prides itself on the reading program and now I understand why. I would recommend this school to any parent.
